Last October on the year 2007, the Phoenix New Times revealed explicit details regarding a grand-jury investigation which happened to negatively budge the infamous anti-immigrant sheriff of Maricopa County, Joe Arpaio.

On the 18th day of October 2007, agents from the Maricopa County Selective Enforcement Unit arrested both Lacey and Larkin for they were responsible for the New Times’ disclosure of details regarding the investigation. However, within 24 hours from the time of the arrest of both newspapermen, the sheriff dropped and closed the case.

Tracing back, Arpaio, who had a bad history of law-enforcement problems, was triggered by the New Times’ revelation for his department’s despicable misdoings was constantly exposed by the publication way back 1992.

Listed amongst Arpaio’s misdeeds include the intriguing number of detainees who lost their lives in his jail cells and the illegal operations carried out by his deputies solely to destroy his rivals in politics. Arpaio’s dispute against Lacey and Larkin and his deliberate disrespect for the rights of the Latinos who resided and worked in his area are two of his major offenses.

During the last few months of the year 2013, Larkin and Lacey received $3.75 million from the Maricopa County which served as a settlement to clean up the unlawful arrests. The business partners then made use of the money to launch a non-profit Lacey & Larkin Frontera Fund.

The fund aimed to support the rights of migrants and immigrants. Moreover, the Lacey & Larkin Frontera Fund also targeted to assist and help the Latin American groups residing in the state of Arizona. It was during the year 2016 when Arpaio slowly faced his downfall. The voters in his area disagreed to grant him with his seventh term as a sheriff. In addition, a judge imprisoned Arpaio for criminal disrespect of court from the Melendres suit, a case which he faced during his deliberate disregard for the Latinos in his area.

What makes things interesting is that a pardon, which can possibly spare the Maricopa County sheriff from a prison term, was granted to him by President Donald Trump who happens to be his long time compadre and friend.

During the third week of November 2017, Stephen Lemon from the Front Page Confidential revisits the story of the decade-long issue between Lacey & Larkin and the Maricopa County sheriff.

According to Lemon’s write up, Jim Larkin mentioned that Arpaio was indeed a terrible sheriff and jailer but he was a ‘great politician’. Moreover, Larkin believes that the sheriff was a precursor to Trump’s political victory thus giving us answers as to why the pardon was granted.
